Costa Rica

Costa Rica -officially the Republic of Costa Rica- is a republic in Central America. It is bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the east-southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east.
Its capital, San Jose, with its large suburb, counts two million residents.

The official language is Spanish and the second most used language is English. The currency is the Colon. Its population -the “Ticos”- are extremely civilized and warmly welcome their visitors.
Peace has been a key concern in Costa Rica. In 1987, the president Oscar Arias Sanchez received the Nobel peace prize for his outstanding participation in the efforts to pacify Central America. The democratic spirit and decisions taken by consensus, without military intervention, appear thus to be a characteristic feature of “Ticos”.

Costa Rica has a reputation of calmness and political peacefulness. Regarded as the oldest and most stable democracy in Latin America, Costa Rica was the first country to have constitutionnaly abolished its army.
Costa Rica is composed of seven provinces, which are in turn divided into 81 cantons.

Located in the heart of the American continent, Costa Rica comprises 51,100 square kilometers. It posesses an exceptional geograhic and climatic diversity. About 25% of Costa Rica is composed of protected nature reserves.

Climate is carebean:hot and humid, and tropical: hot and dry.
Between these two extreems, it is rather moderate in the central region and cooler in altitude. The central American mountain range runs through Costa Rica, with Mount Chirippo reaching 3820 meters:

The country made its choice for ecotourism which is concerned about respect, development and protection of the environment. Its flora is among the most renowned in the world with its impressively exotic varieties of trees and flowers.

The country moreover possesses an extremely rich fauna. It is indeed heaven for birds and tropical butterflies. Jaguars, pumas, caimans, crocodiles, snakes, …. are also found there. It is a fishers’ paradise, whether in lakes like Arenal

or even more for big game sea fishing. It is also a surfers’ paradise as some of the beaches have “spots” with international reputation.
